‘Madama Butterfly’ proves a crowd pleaser
Daniel Snyder as Pinkerton is a marvelous match for her
(Mihoko Kinoshita as Butterfly). His all-American good looks and muscular
tenor voice make us hope against hope he will live up to Cio-Cio-San’s
dreams. His “Long Duet” with Kinoshita
in Act 1 was especially mesmerizing, with its intimacy and grace and he brought
a sensitivity to the role that made us believe that his remorse is genuine when
he finally returns to Japan.
Hello Friends... My first 'Eisenstein' was tremendous fun in
Portland this year, and I was privileged to sing with Mihoko Kinoshita
in the Middlebury Opera production of Madama Butterfly with Emmanuel
Plasson conducting, Doug Anderson directing. As I think back - I
realize I was in Portland for the best two weeks of the year (perfect,
perfect weather in a great city) and staying on a farm at the foot of
Green Mountain in Vermont during the changing of the fall colors! Now back in New York, I'm currently preparing for my first 'Faust' - and reworking Tristan. American
originals like 'Heart of a Soldier' with San Francisco Opera and 'The
Great Gatsby' at Ensemble Parallele were great moments of theater and
provocativie musical experiences for me, and again - a beautiful time spent with creative companions in an exciting city. I'd Like to
thank great colleagues, directors and conductors for the wonderful
moments and shared experiences of the last year, including Rosa
D'Imperio, Jason Stearns, Brian Staufenbiel, and Nicole Paiment, the
composers John Harbison and Christopher Theofinidis and many others.
I was very excited to work alongside Thomas Hampson, which was a
learning and artistic experience. Check my schedule page for updates as the new season unfolds, and look over my recordings page with lots of clips old and new.
